McCoy College Academic Advisors Ashley Hulme and Sheryl Gage won the best in state presentation award at the 2009 Texas Academic Advising Network Conference in Houston, TX. Their presentation was titled "When you are no Longer 19 and Still have to take Freshmen English: A new look at Advising Non-traditional Students."  It focused on meeting the special issues that non-traditional students face including full-time employment, family obligations, commuters to the college campus, and being veterans of the armed forces. They presentation featured real life profiles and proposed solutions. The offered strategies which advisors can use to meet non-traditional students’ expectations.

The conference took place February 18-20, 2009 and was attended by more than 300 academic advisors representing over 40 colleges and universities from across the state of Texas. The conference theme and presentations focused on innovative advising ideas and practices from across the state, as well as rejuvenating college advising centers, advisors, and students.
