Ashley Hulme and Sheryl Gage, McCoy College Academic Advisors, attended a regional National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) conference in New Orleans May 4-6, 2009. Over 250 advisors from institutions in Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, and guests from London attended. It was an opportunity to share, discuss, and learn new ideas from colleagues across the south central part of the United States.
Ashley and Sheryl did a poster presentation titled “When You Are No Longer 19 and Still Have to Take Freshmen English: A New Look at Advising Non-Traditional Students.” This presentation covered the special issues that adult students face with juggling school, jobs, and family and how advisors need to refresh their approach when relating to these adult students. Additionally, the presentation included information about students that are veterans of the armed forces. Real life student profiles were presented and proposed solutions were discussed.
They also attended several presentations by other institutions including a special summer program for provisionally admitted freshmen, helping students select a college major, infusing technology into academic advising, and a presentation by SMU Cox School of Business on linking students with business community leaders in a mentoring program. Other presentations involved strategies for advising freshman students, utilizing counseling theories in advising, budgeting for special student programs, and a very helpful presentation on improving one’s time management skills from the University of Kansas.
