Admission Requirements

There are four different sets of admissions requirements for McCoy College depending on how many hours of college-level coursework (completed after high school graduation) you have completed and posted to TXST record at the time of your application.


Special Note for 2021 Internal Applicants

If you have fewer than 30 hours of college-level coursework completed, do not have SAT/ACT scores, AND were admitted to Texas State for a 2021 term in a major outside of business but are now wanting to change to a business major:

  • Incoming Freshman: You will need to wait until you meet the 30+ Hours After High School admission requirements below to internally apply for admission to McCoy College to pursue a business major
  • Incoming Transfer: You must have at least 16+ hours of college-level coursework completed and meet Transfer Admission Requirements OR wait until you meet the 30+ Hour After High School admission requirements below to internally apply for admission to McCoy College to pursue a business major

Zero Hours After High School

Students with no college coursework completed after high school graduation

Eligibility to Apply: Students with less than 30 hours of college coursework do not have any specific course prerequisites needed to apply

Automatic Admission: Must meet requirements for Freshman Assured Admission

Competitive Review Admission: There is no competitive review process for students with less than 30 hours. Once a student has 30+ hours completed, they may reapply to McCoy College using  30+ hours admission criteria.


1-29 Hours After High School

Students with 1-29 hours of college coursework completed after high school graduation

Eligibility to Apply: Students with less than 30 hours of college coursework do not have any specific course prerequisites needed to apply

Automatic Admission: Must meet requirements for Assured Admission for Transfer Students

Competitive Review Admission: There is no competitive review process for students with less than 30 hours. Once a student has 30+ hours completed, they may reapply to McCoy College using  30+ hours admission criteria.


30+ Hours After High School

Students with 30 or more hours of college coursework completed after high school graduation

Eligibility to Apply: Students with 30+ hours must have the following three courses (or their approved equivalents) completed and posted to their TXST record to apply:

  • ENG 1310 (TCCN: ENGL 1301) - College Writing I
  • ENG 1320 (TCCN: ENGL 1302) - College Writing II
  • MATH 1329 (TCCN: MATH 1325) - Mathematics for Business & Economics II

Automatic Admission: Must meet requirements for Assured Admission for Transfer Students AND have an overall GPA of a 3.25 or higher

Competitive Review Admission: Applicants with an overall GPA below a 3.25 but at least a 2.50 or higher will be considered for admission through a competitive review process. To be eligible for admission, candidates must earn grades of at least one B and two C's in ENG 1310 (TCCN: ENGL 1301), ENG 1320 (TCCN: ENGL 1302) and MATH 1329 (TCCN: MATH 1325) or their equivalents. Students under competitive review who do not meet these minimum grades will be denied admission to McCoy College.


Second Degree Seeker

Students who already have already earned a first bachelor degree

Eligibility to Apply: Students who have completed a four-year bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university

Automatic Admission: Earned an overall GPA of a 2.50 or higher in first degree

Competitive Review Admission: There is no competitive review process for second-degree seeking students. Once a student's first degree overall GPA has been earned, there are no opportunities to raise it and admission to McCoy College will never be possible


Additional Notes

  • Current Texas State students whose TXST GPA is below a 2.0 are not eligible to apply for McCoy College regardless of their overall GPA or assured admittance status. Students with a TXST GPA below a 2.0 must raise their TXST GPA to a 2.0 or higher in order to apply.
  • Students who are not admitted to McCoy College (with the exception of second-degree-seeking students) will be considered for admission to Texas State as an Exploratory Professional (pre-business) student and may be advised by PACE Advising Services (incoming freshmen) or University College Advising Services (transfer students and current Texas State students).
